The In4Kids/CHI Young Persons Advisory Group (YPAG) made a remarkable contribution to this year’s CHI Research and Innovation Day, with many attendees highlighting their involvement as one of the event’s standout features.
Throughout the day, YPAG members brought energy, insight and enthusiasm to a range of activities, demonstrating the value of meaningful youth involvement in research. Their participation showcased the importance of amplifying young voices and highlighted the positive impact that patient and public involvement (PPI) can have on shaping research that is relevant, inclusive and impactful.
The dedicated YPAG breakout session, chaired by In4Kids YPAG Coordinator Caoimhe, featured YPAG member Jess and CHI YPAG Coordinator Sharon Rafferty, who shared practical advice on how to meaningfully involve young people in research, as well as outlining the PPI supports available in CHI.
“I absolutely loved being at CHI Research and Innovation Day, thanks so much for inviting me and allowing me to present. It was such a brilliant experience! I’m very glad to hear that everyone loved hearing about the YPAG” YPAG member Jess
This was followed by a joint presentation: ‘Co-creating patient information videos with a Young Person Advisory Group’ for an EB dentistry project from Dr Kate Kenny and YPAG member Rachael. A great example of genuine collaboration in practice!
The YPAG poster, co-authored and co-designed by Polly and Maisie, was proudly displayed in the exhibition space, reflecting the value of true partnership in research.
“Thank you so much for letting me help with the abstract and the poster presentations on Thursday. I had such a great time and really enjoyed the experience” YPAG member Polly
In addition, YPAG members took on key roles as oral and poster presentation judges and helped to run an engaging and informative YPAG stand.
The strong presence of YPAG members across presentations, judging panels, exhibitions and networking opportunities reflected In4Kids’ ongoing commitment to embedding young people as active partners in research. From sharing lived experience and practical advice to co-creating research outputs and supporting fellow researchers, the group demonstrated the power of genuine collaboration. Their contributions not only enriched the day’s discussions but also inspired researchers to continue placing children and young people at the heart of innovation and research.
